Thanks to everyone for the good discussion that happened at yesterday's meeting. Please read and respond.
The term “analyze” literally means to break down/take apart something to see what it is made of. Analyze the last sentence that Grant’s teacher says at the end of chapter 8 (or chapter 9 as it might be on the nook)
“’Just do the best you can. But it won’t matter.’”
Share your analysis of this statement. Before responding to the post, reread the scene to recall what is happening in the scene.
Your response should include insight into Matthew Antoine who says this, why he says this, and the effect you think it has on Grant, our main character. After you have posted your thoughts about this, you must comment on 2 other members of our group.
Check back on the blog as there will be a new post Monday evening.
I believe Grants teacher chose to use those last words on Grant to let him know that he should do the best he can to teach those children but in the end it won't matter because the cycle still continues no matter what. Even if Grant reached the kids, the kids do not stay with Grant every single hour of the day. Yet they go home to parents which aren't educated and learn more from them and their surroundings so his work will never have a true impact on most kids because of the effect of outside forces. The teacher wanted grant to understand that he shouldn't expect much to change and that he should have left instead of taking on the burden of being a teacher because the kids are hopeless based on their society which works to execute their evolving and growth in the world.
ReplyDeletei agree very much with you i really liked your post i like how you also brought up the cycle. and it sucks to know you can try your best but wont make a change supposively i go against that because i know it will change something in a good or bad way. everything has an effect.
Deletei bealive that the quote “’Just do the best you can. But it won’t matter.’” is said to Grant by mathew is because that was his teacher he knows basicklly what would happend. the effect it got on grant is huge because here he is as a teacher and hes looking at jefferson he wants to help him but thinks their is no point so he does not have enough reason to help or try since he thinks he knows the end is ganna be. altough yea as we talked in class it may be a cycle and what mathew did to grant and if grant does the same and not help all he doing is keeping the cycle going he should break it. hes basickly saying try your hardest break yyour back or give your life for them and you still wont see a change jefferson basickly is doomed because of the mentality mathew gave grant.i didnt know exactly how to put it out there in words but i tried my best. The same is with grant he know whats right and what to do but hes confused he can talk about it but dont know how or if he would be able to help jefferson.
ReplyDeleteby the way i cant comment on two others because samantha the only one that wrote back so shes the only one im giving feedback too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jose & Samantha about the quote referring to the vicious cycle that is occuring with education ,& sucess among the community. I also think that Grant's teacher makes that comment to make Grant give up. To me, Matthew Antoine seems like a bitter former teacher who not only was colorist, but didn't seek potential from anyone else but Grant. I also think that this statement from someone that Grant admires, yet abhores at the same time will eventually make Grant try harder to make a difference. To be able to prove his former teacher wrong. That's what I think.
ReplyDeleteyea in a way he is he dosent wanna be like mathew but he dosent see any other option in his eyes grant is being lead by mathew. if he tries to proove mathew wrong his ganna atleast give it a try
